Dr. Asai has over 10 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings, including university counseling centers, secondary education, a residential youth facility, and a community mental health clinic. He has provided individual and group therapy, administered neuropsychological assessments, supervised graduate students, and supported clients from a wide range of backgrounds in navigating various personal and social challenges.
Dr. Asai's therapeutic approach is eclectic, integrating person-centered, insight-oriented,
and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, grounded in a psychodynamic foundation.
He believes in creating a safe, empathetic, and nonjudgmental space that encourages
vulnerability and self-exploration.
His areas of interest include suicide prevention, grief and loss, the well-being of
individuals navigating questions of belonging, cross-cultural mental health, trauma-informed
care, body confidence, self-acceptance, and teaching. Prior to joining the CAPS team,
Dr. Asai was an associate part-time psychology professor at an inner-city community
college in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he taught gender studies, human sexuality,
social psychology, and other courses.
