UH Researchers Map Houston鈥檚 Mental Health Deserts for the First Time

For the first time, UH researchers have mapped Houston鈥檚 鈥渕ental health deserts,鈥� revealing inequities in access to care across the city. The study, published Oct. 15 in Frontiers of Public Health, highlights the uneven distribution of mental health professionals and calls for targeted interventions and policy solutions. 鈥淪o many neighborhoods had no mental health professionals in their ZIP codes,鈥� said Chakema Carmack, senior author and associate professor of health. 鈥淚t does follow patterns of other lack-of-access variables out there, such as food access, physical care access, clinic access and insurance coverage.鈥�

UH researchers are at the forefront of developing a strong, sustainable teacher workforce 鈥� backed by a $1 million grant from the Houston Endowment. The funding supports the work of UH鈥檚 Center for Research, Evaluation, and Advancement of Teacher Education, which will study how school districts are using different teacher certification pathways to improve student outcomes and teacher recruitment and retention.

Charlotte Carp, UH College of Education program director and a board-certified behavior analyst, talks about how the 91猎奇 is expanding its behavioral health offerings this fall to provide students with comprehensive training in a high-demand field of Applied Behavior Analysis with the goal of better serving the community.
