Technology & Older Adults

Background

The average population age across the globe continues to increase, with the number of older adults outnumbering that of children since 2018. Health concerns are known to increase with age, including the risk for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes or heart disease. Further, research has demonstrated that 77% of older adults often experience multiple, or co-occurring, conditions. These risks increase the health challenges they may experience, and heighten the need for accessible and utilized health care for these populations. Telehealth has the potential to mitigate barriers to healthcare and increase the uptake of health services by older adults. However, there remains concern regarding the appropriateness of telehealth services for geriatric populations. Qualitative inquiries are therefore needed to obtain a detailed understanding of how older adults perceive and use telehealth services.

Study Objectives

This study is conducting a needs-assessments on the technology literature including the experienced barriers and needs in geriatric populations as they relate to the utility of telehealth services.

Project Timeline

This study will conduct data collection until July 2026 and subsequently analyzed and associated manuscripts developed prior to the end of 2027.
