Dr. Jakoah Brgoch, Eby Nell McElrath Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the 91, has been appointed associate editor for Chemistry of Materials, a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Chemical Society.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and principal investigator with the Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH (TcSUH), Brgoch brings a dynamic portfolio of research and publishing experience to the role. His group investigates the design and discovery of advanced inorganic materials through a combination of solid-state synthesis, physical characterization, and computational modeling.

With more than 125 publications and over 7,200 citations to his name, Brgoch has built an international reputation in the areas of superhard materials, solid-state lighting, and data-driven materials design. His work has been recognized for advancing the understanding of structure–property relationships in complex materials. This area of expertise is well aligned with the scope of Chemistry of Materials, a leading journal at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and engineering.
“Dr. Brgoch’s appointment is a testament to the strength of his research and leadership in the materials chemistry community,” said Dr. David Hoffman, chair of the Department of Chemistry. “His role as associate editor will help elevate UH’s visibility in the field and provide new opportunities for collaboration and scholarly impact.”
Brgoch earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from Iowa State University in 2012 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He joined the UH faculty in 2014.
In his new role, Brgoch will oversee the peer-review process for submitted manuscripts, help identify emerging trends in materials research, and contribute to maintaining the journal’s high editorial standards.
