VISION 2027 Strategic Publication

vision The Division of Administration and Finance has released its new divisional strategic plan, VISION 2027. The new strategic plan highlights and outlines how the nine departments within A&F will collectively work with university leadership to forge a path toward becoming a top 50 public university. VISION 2027 illustrates the division鈥檚 dedication and focus to an ongoing improvement to processes, programs, and service enhancements over the next five years. We are in the thick of summer, and for the 91猎奇, that means freshman and transfer student orientations and resource fairs with the Administration and Finance departments are heavily involved in these initiatives. The summertime has also given UH Dining Services the opportunity to launch Phase II of the Cougar Woods Dining Commons upgrades. This month鈥檚 newsletter highlights all the collective work and efforts the department is undertaking this summer.

A&F Departments Inform New Students at Orientations and Resource Fairs

Departments from the Division of Administration spend part of their summer educating incoming 91猎奇 freshmen, transfer students, and their parents with all the necessary information to ensure their student's first year at UH is a success. On hand to share information were Cougar Card Services, Parking & Transportation Services, Campus Safey, the UH Campus Store, and the 91猎奇 Police Department. A&F Engages with Kids During Take Your Child to Work Day

The 91猎奇 Police Department, Fire & Life Safety, and Environmental Health & Safety took time out of their workday to participate in Take Your Child to Work Day in June. UH Employees Put Boots on the Ground at HR鈥檚 Wellness & Benefits Fair Bootcamp

The 91猎奇鈥檚 Recreation Center was buzzing with energy as benefit-eligible faculty and staff gathered for Human Resources鈥� annual Wellness & Benefits Fair. This year鈥檚 event drew an impressive 1,475 attendees, making it one of the most well-attended fairs in recent years. The fair offers employees a valuable opportunity to engage directly with health and wellness providers, ask questions, and gather information about their benefits. Optometry Kiosk Part of New Campus Store Experience

A vision by the College of Optometry led to a chance conversation that became a reality: a new kiosk at the UH Campus Store in the Student Center South. Dr. Andrew Archila, associate dean for Clinical Operations and a clinical professor, approached Timothy Jackson, market leader, 91猎奇 System, to explore ways the college could get more visibility at the bookstore. While for most, the summer is a time for relaxation and vacations but at Cougar Woods Dining Commons, crews are busy working on multiple projects at the dining facility. These include the Phase II refresh, an air curtain project, a generator project, and general facility improvements, such as new cabinetry, the replacement of HVAC exhaust fans, and lighting improvements. UH Dining Services Receives Honorable Mention by NACUFS

UH Dining Services has won the Honorable Mention Loyal E. Horton Dining Award for Residential Special Event of the Year for their 2024 Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month celebration. This prestigious recognition, given by the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS), celebrates UH Dining鈥� commitment to fostering memorable student experiences on campus. The Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month event featured a culturally inspired menu, lively performances, and partnerships with both on-campus and local community members.
A reminder that UH is currently undergoing a transformation as part of the Centennial Construction project in preparation for the university鈥檚 Centennial Celebration in 2027. The university鈥檚 main entrance, University Drive, is closed for public vehicular traffic through 2026 for construction work. Copy, Print and Delivery Services Helps UH Prepare for Fall Semester

As the fall semester approached, Copy, Print and Delivery Services was hard at work supporting the university鈥檚 preparations for welcoming new and returning students. This year, the team printed, assembled, and mailed 31,514 admission packets to potential students. Copy and Print Services produced a banner/poster, a sticker sheet, and a gift voucher for each packet. For use at the University, the team printed 2,000 maps to help students get around campus. These efforts by CPD helped to ensure a welcoming experience for students and visitors.

Parking & Transportation Paving the Way for Fall Semester

Parking & Transportation is paving the way for the fall semester by reinvesting in the campus lots and garages. One of the upgrades Parking & Transportation is undergoing is in lot 19C and Zone C where standing water would pool after rain. The standing water would create hazardous conditions. This summer, crews have repaved the parking lot to alleviate the situation. Read about all the upgrades Parking & Transportation is working on this summer.

Delivery Services Team Receives Stamp of Gratitude on National Postal Worker Day

Shasta Chatbot Ready for Online Questions

Shasta, the University鈥檚 new AI chatbot, is now live on all the Office of Administration departmental websites, marking the second phase of its campus-wide rollout. Employees can access Shasta 24/7 while browsing the pages of the Auxiliary Services, University Services, and Parking and Transportation. The chatbot serves students, faculty, staff, and the public by answering questions and offering assistance with the services provided by these teams.
Facilities/Construction Management Restructuring Announcement

Facilities/Construction Management has undergone a slight restructuring that includes the creation of a new unit: Facilities Customer Relations & Communications (FCRC). FCRC will be comprised of two dedicated teams: Customer Relations Team and Communications Team. This restructuring represents a great opportunity for F/CM to continue evolving. With a renewed emphasis on customer service and strategic communications, we are confident that FCRC will play a pivotal role in building stronger campus partnerships.
The 91猎奇 and the 91猎奇 System have released an updated fiscal year 2025-2026 calendar. This calendar provides deadlines and submission instructions for administrative and financial activities at the end of fiscal year 2025 and the beginning of fiscal year 2026. about the UH/UHS FY2025-26 calendar and schedule.
POWER UP Your Fitness

HR POWER UP provides upcoming activities students, faculty, and staff can join. On Wednesday, August 27, take a walk to Butler Plaza to enjoy the first Maker鈥檚 Market of the semester, now occurring every 4th Wednesday of the month. Shop handcrafted goods, art, and more from local vendors 鈥� all accepting Cougar Cash. You can also join UH Wellness for Sunrise Yoga at 7AM and Sunset Yoga at 7 PM on the A.D. Bruce Religion Center lawn, Tuesday, September 9. If you鈥檙e looking for something even more active, join the CRWC, Friday, Sept. 5, 10:45 AM 鈥� 1 PM, at the Student Centers Plaza for the Dance Party. Participate in Zumba, line dancing and more.

A&F Employees Received Staff Council Scholarship

Two A&F employees were the recipients of a 2025-26 Women Gender Resource Center Scholarships at the 2025 Staff Council Awards & Scholarship Ceremony. Jennifer Rea, Executive Director, Facilities Construction Management, and Maia Solomon, Emergency Management Specialist, Office of Emergency Management each received the scholarship. Rea is pursuing a Doctorate of Business Administration while Solomon is currently attaining a Doctorate of Public Policy.
UHPD Lead Security Officer Alan Pravel Recognized

91猎奇 Lead Security Officer Alan Pravel is being praised for assisting a UH PHD candidate in need of assistance the day before his dissertation. The candidate, a Department of Economics student, needed to enter his assigned room to set it up but discovered that it was locked. Pravel arrived, but none of the keys he had worked. Eventually, using professional tools and without damaging the door, he managed to open it successfully. Officer Pravel鈥檚 professionalism and determination reflect the values UHPD strives for.
Behind the Badge set for September 22

The annual Behind the Badge community engagement event is set for September 22 at the M.D. Anderson Rockwell Pavilion from 3 鈥� 5 p.m. Event attendees can expect to meet and interact with university departments supporting safety on campus such as UHPD, Fire & Life Safety, the Office of Emergency Management, and more. Local law enforcement agencies like Houston Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, and more.
UHPD Officer Darell Portis Receives Recognition

UHPD Security Officer Darell Portis is being highlighted by Student Housing for his outstanding assistance to a community member. Officer Portis demonstrated exceptional compassion and professionalism, ensuring the individual鈥檚 safety and comfort during a challenging situation by providing the pedestrian with personal shoes and water. The actions, professionalism, and kindness shown by Officer Portis reflect the values UHPD strives for.

Coming Soon - UH DAY AT THE CORP 5K

HR POWER UP Employee Wellness will once again host UH DAY AT THE CORP 5K on Thursday, October 23rd, in beautiful Memorial Park between 4:30-6:45 p.m. Now in its 9th year, the Corp 5K Run/Walk is the third largest 5K in Houston and is among the largest corporate runs in the country. Designed to promote employee wellness and team building, the activity brings together employees from over 200 companies each year.
Cougar Red Friday

Cougar Red Friday is one of the 91猎奇's main traditions. It occurs every week on Friday, and all you have to do to participate is wear anything red! Show your Cougar spirit by wearing red on Fridays and eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Cougar Woods or Moody Dining Commons for only $6.75. The discount does not apply for items such as red pins, belts, earrings, hats, and minor clothing articles. Must be wearing at least 50% red.
CERT Training Registration Now Open

Registration for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Training is open for the fall semester. The course, organized by the Office of Emergency Management and Fire & Life Safety, will be held over two weekends beginning on September 19th, and ending on September 27th. CERT Training participants will learn how to prepare themselves, their families, and neighbors in the event of a disaster. The training will include disaster preparedness, fire suppression, search and rescue, and terrorism awareness to name a few. Register today to save your spot and learn more about CERT Training.
Fall Vaccination Clinics

This fall plan to protect yourself and others by getting vaccinated for the flu and COVID during one of several vaccination clinics to be held on campus. Coordinated by HR POWER UP Employee Wellness and the Student Health Center, clinics are open to students, faculty, and staff and will be conducted by H-E-B Pharmacy on different days and locations throughout the campus, Sept. 10 - Sept. 17.

Emergency call boxes are placed at various locations across the 91猎奇 campus. The call boxes can place a call directly to the UHPD dispatch center to request police assistance, security escorts, and any other police service. The call boxes are on free-standing towers or mounted on light poles and are labeled 'Emergency.' See the locations of the emergency call boxes on this interactive map.
The 91猎奇 has selected DocuSign as the digital signature software solution. DocuSign is an e-signature solution that allows users to quickly and securely access and sign documents. Using DocuSign will facilitate the electronic signing and sending of documents while providing insight throughout the signing process. In August, FIXIT鈥檚 new work order software will be implemented. The same FIXIT icon will be linked to the new software in AccessUH. Some new features include a faster and easier user interface on desktop and mobile, increased visibility of existing work orders, and a more intuitive online service request portal. As part of preparing for this change, the Building Coordinator meeting held in July included a presentation on the new work order management system.

When the Sirens Sound

The 91猎奇 Outdoor Warning Siren System is designed to alert students, faculty, staff and visitors in the event of a shelter-in-place emergency where it is unsafe to be outdoors. The siren is activated by the University and provides a quick method of notifying the campus with an audible tone that can be heard outdoors. It is meant to alert everyone to seek shelter indoors.鈥�

DUO Increases Safety in Cybersecurity

You may think YOU get a lot of mail鈥�.In reality, only about a third of all mail received by UH mail servers actually gets delivered to UH faculty, staff and student mailboxes. This is thanks to the UH System-wide implementation of Proofpoint, an email security solution that protects users from hackers, viruses, malicious software (malware), phishing and other potentially damaging attacks.
Students, faculty and staff who have a bicycle on campus are required to register it. Registration takes only minutes to complete and is free. A registration sticker will be provided and should be placed on the bicycle. Log in to your myParking account through AccessUH to register.
UH Police Department - Crime Prevention Awareness Talks

The UH Police Department is sharing safety tips and precautions that you can take to reduce the risk. to yourself and discourage those who commit crimes. The UH Go Blue Phone feature is another resource at your fingertips, along with the Security Escort Program, and Cougar Ride. UH Parking is enhancing the parking experience through the implementation of virtual meter parking. Payment is no longer accepted through physical meters. There is signage at each of the virtual meter locations on campus explaining how to pay to park in these visitor spaces, which are marked with orange striping. about the text-to-pay virtual meter parking.

Copy and Print Wins ACUP+ Award

The 91猎奇鈥檚 Copy and Print department were recognized by the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP+) with an ACUP+ Platinum Award in the Offset Single Page category for their Report on Philanthropy brochure that details UH鈥檚 philanthropy efforts. The awards were announced at ACUP鈥檚 2025 Conference held in Costa Mesa, California.
Recognizing Leadership: Cindy Crews Honored for Excellence

Parking & Transportation Director Cindy Crews received the Parking Employee Award of Excellence at the 2024 Texas Parking and Transportation Association (TPTA) Annual Conference, held April in Galveston. Crews received the recognition for her outstanding leadership and customer-focused initiatives at UH. Under her guidance, the department has made major strides in operational efficiency and service quality while managing a $25 million parking permit program.
Innovation in Action: Lot Spotters Takes the Spotlight

The department鈥檚 Lot Spotters program, launched in March 2024, earned the Parking Program Award of Excellence at the 2024 Texas Parking and Transportation Association (TPTA) Annual Conference, held April in Galveston. Lot Spotter was recognized for its creative, cost-effective approach to customer service and issue resolution. Using QR code-enabled signage, Lot Spotters empowers users to quickly report parking-related issues 鈥� such as broken elevators, litter, or maintenance needs 鈥� via a short online form.
Mark Rosanes, a dedicated member of the 91猎奇鈥檚 University Information Technology department, was recently awarded the President鈥檚 Excellence Award in the Technical, Service, and Craft category. With over two decades of service at UH, starting in December 2001 and transitioning to UIT in May 2009, Mark has become an essential part of the campus鈥� communication infrastructure. Mark鈥檚 recognition in the Technical, Service, and Craft category celebrates the technical expertise he has brought to his role over the years. about Rosanes receiving the President's Excellence Award.
Assistant Chief of Police Nominated for 911der Woman of the Year

Assistant Chief of Police Chandra Johnson has been nominated as a 2024 911der Woman of the Year candidate. The honor recognizes the incredible achievements and dedication of women working in the 9-1-1 industry. Johnson鈥檚 nomination highlighted her over 35 years of experience in law enforcement, the last 10 of which have been spent at UHPD, where she instituted an evidence tracking system and helped the department become an accredited police agency with the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
UH Dining Sr Executive Chef Chad McDonald Wins Awards at NACUFS Nationals

UH Dining Senior Executive Chef Chad McDonald won third place at the NACUFS Culinary Challenge as part of the NACUFS 2024 National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Representing the Southern Region for the second consecutive year, McDonald鈥檚 fruit de mer put him among the top three, winning an American Culinary Federation (ACF) gold medal in the process. McDonald bested his performance from a year ago where he won an ACF silver medal.
