Gregory Scott Brown, M.D., FAPA, FAIHM

Gregory Scott Brown, M.D., FAPA, FAIHM, is a board-certified psychiatrist, educator and author. As a clinical associate professor at the Fertitta College of Medicine, he currently serves as the psychiatry clerkship director at the 91ÁÔĆć. He is the author of the book, “The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice for Overcoming Anxiety and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life” (Harper Collins, 2022). Brown’s book has been printed in four languages and is available in English, Portuguese, Turkish, and Mandarin.

For almost a decade, Brown has been involved in mental health education, both within the classroom and for the broader public. He has gained notability as one of the preeminent mental health media experts in the United States. His commentary has been featured in the “New York Times”, “Essence”, “WebMD”, and “Medscape”, among several other high-profile publications. He also serves on the advisory board for “Men’s Health” magazine, where he is also a contributing columnist. Brown also co-hosted the popular mental health social media series, “Friday Sessions”, for “Men’s Health” for five years. Among his guests were former Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, Senator Chris Murphy, NBA all-star Kevin Love, and award-winning journalist Lisa Ling. Additionally, Brown has written mental health stories for the “Washington Post”. He has been featured on over 20 podcasts, and he has been invited to present for several high-impact organizations including the American College of Psychiatrists, SXSW, TEDx, and the “New York Times”.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brown appeared on a segment for the “Today Show” where he discussed the mental health implications of social distancing. He has also appeared as a guest on “Live with Kelly and Mark” multiple times discussing topics ranging from signs and symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to treatments for occupational burnout. Brown has also appeared on the “PBS News Hour” with veteran journalist Judy Woodruff where he discussed holiday depression and how to have productive conversations about suicide. A long-time member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Brown currently serves as chair of the APA’s Council on Communications.

A native Houstonian, Brown is a graduate of Rice University and the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. He completed residency in general psychiatry at the University of Texas Dell Medical School and a fellowship in integrative medicine from the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine. A committed educator, Brown was awarded an Outstanding Resident Educator of the Year Award during his psychiatry residency. He was also awarded a SAMSHA Fellowship by the APA, and in 2024 he was honored as a fellow of the APA (FAPA).

Brown and his wife live in the Houston area where they are staunch supporters of the arts in the community. Brown serves on the board of ROCO and the Houston Youth Symphony. When he isn’t busy working, he enjoys cooking, exercising and traveling.
