Esther Soundar, M.D.
Esther Soundar, M.D., is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. She is board certified in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine by The American Board of Pathology.
Soundar held dual appointments as an assistant professor of pathology at the Indiana University School of Medicine and as the division director of the transfusion medicine and cellular therapy at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University Health hospital system. She also served as the transfusion medicine fellowship program director for four years. Soundar has taught transfusion medicine, hemostasis and clinical pathology to medical students, residents and fellows in all clinical specialties.
She completed her undergraduate medical education (MBBS) from Tirunelveli Medical College and received her MD degree from the University of Madras. She worked as a primary care physician in rural areas for two years before taking up a role in medical education at the Stanley Medical College in India where she taught physiology and internal medicine. In the United States, she received her residency training in clinical pathology and fellowship training at the Baylor College of Medicine at Houston.
Soundar is a member of several national health organizations and is an avid researcher. She has presented her research at both national and international conferences, as well as being an avid publisher. Soundar is a very passionate teacher, and she is very interested in an active learning approach in medical education, as in case-based learning where students analyze real clinical scenarios to develop knowledge and problem-solving skills.
