Elizabeth Thoyakulathu, M.D.

Elizabeth Thoyakulathu, M.D., is a clinical assistant professor in the department of clinical sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. A board-certified family medicine physician, she brings expertise in global health, health equity, and community-centered care to both her clinical and academic roles. She has cared for a wide range of populations, from newborns to geriatrics, in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings, including work as a hospitalist and locum tenens physician throughout Texas and the Houston area.

Her work focuses on interdisciplinary, holistic approaches to medicine and on reducing barriers to care through advocacy, education and service. She is particularly passionate about mentoring future physicians and advancing health equity through compassionate, evidence-based practice.

Thoyakulathu's dedication to public health is evident from her two years of service with the U.S. Peace Corps in Swaziland, where she led HIV/AIDS education and stigma reduction initiatives. As an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, she developed community-based wellness initiatives for HIV-positive young adults in Houston. She has presented at national and regional conferences on topics such as diabetes education, peer support for chronic disease management, and community health promotion.

She earned her medical degree and a diploma in tropical medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in Family Medicine and served as education chair. During her time at Baylor, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She received her undergraduate degree with honors in government, with a minor in biology, from The University of Texas at Austin. Her many honors include the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, the AFMRD Advocacy Summit Scholarship, induction into Phi Beta Kappa, and the Bill Archer Fellowship.
